Telangana Govt Bans Raw Egg Mayonnaise For One Year
The Telangana government banned the production, sale and storage of mayonnaise made from raw eggs for a period of one year. The decision comes following multiple incidents of food poisoning in the recent months.
As per the order issued by the state Commissioner of Food Safety, it said, “As per the observations during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public, mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be a cause of food poisoning in multiple incidents in the past few months.”
Mainly used in sandwiches and salads, mayonnaise is a thick, creamy sauce that enhances the flavour of the dishes. It’s made by whisking egg yolks with oil.
What led to the ban?
The decision to ban raw egg mayonnaise came to light after a tragic incident that led to the death of a woman, sparking food safety concerns. Aged 31, Reshma Begum along with her two daughters consumed momo from a street vendor in Banjara Hills. After a short while, they all witnessed severe symptoms of food poisoning , which included vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. Though the family hoped for a respite, their condition kept deteriorating, leading them to seek medical help. Sadly, Reshma Begum lost her life, while her two daughters are undergoing treatment.
Notably, the food safety department of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation with the help of Banjara Hills Police nabbed the vendor responsible for the food that led to the poisoning.
While investigating, it was found that at least 20 other residents from nearby areas were hospitalised with similar symptoms after consuming food from the same vendor. Shockingly, the vendor did not have the licence of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The vendor was found not adhering to basic hygiene standards.
